We believe privacy is the default setting — not a premium add-on.
nsnumber exists to give everyone a mailbox that keeps its promises: your messages, your contacts, and your patterns of life belong to you alone. We build the tools; you hold the keys.
Why we started
Email is the master key to modern life. It resets your passwords, holds your contracts, and remembers who you talk to and when. Yet for two decades the dominant providers treated that intimacy as inventory — reading messages to build ad profiles and quietly normalizing surveillance as the cost of a "free" inbox.
We started nsnumber because we wanted the opposite arrangement. A small team of cryptographers and product engineers set out to build email that is genuinely private by construction: encrypted on your device, unreadable to us, and still fast and pleasant enough to use every day.
The name is a nod to the idea that your identity online should be a handle you control, not a number assigned to you by someone monetizing your attention. Today nsnumber protects mailboxes for journalists, clinicians, lawyers, families, and anyone who simply prefers not to be watched.
Five principles we won't compromise on.
-
Encryption is not optional
Every mailbox is end-to-end encrypted by default — no toggles to forget, no "pro" tier to unlock privacy.
-
You are the customer, not the product
We're funded by subscriptions alone. When you don't pay with money, you pay with your data — and we refuse that trade.
-
Collect as little as possible
We keep only what's strictly needed to run the service, and we delete it as soon as we can.
-
Prove it, don't promise it
Our cryptography is built on open standards and audited by outsiders. Trust should be earned in the open.
-
Privacy without the friction
Security only helps if people actually use it. We sweat the details so that the private choice is also the easy, delightful one.
How your mail actually stays private.
Your password stays on your device
When you sign in, your password is used locally to unlock a private key. We never receive the password itself — only a separate verifier that can't decrypt anything.
We store ciphertext, not content
Message bodies, attachments, and contact details are encrypted before they reach us. If our servers were seized or breached, the attacker would find only unreadable data.
Open standards, independent audits
We build on OpenPGP and modern authenticated encryption rather than a secret in-house scheme. Independent firms review our clients and servers, and we publish their findings.
Honest about the edges
Metadata like message timing and recipients is minimized but not fully erasable, and mail to non-encrypted providers can only be as private as the other side allows. We tell you exactly where the guarantees end.
